OVERVIEW
Fixed text, as opposed to variable text, will not change. You can set the following properties for fixed text:

  • Character properties, including font, style, and size
  • Paragraph properties, including alignment, word wrap, and line spacing
  • General properties, including the object name, position, rotation, anchor point, and margins
  • Shape settings, including the shape type to use for the object's background, background color and border options
  • Rendering properties, including resolution of any selected pattern applied to the object's background
  • Data source properties, where you can change the text (for fixed objects the data source is Fixed data)

You have the option of selecting printer fonts (those resident on your printer) or graphic fonts (those resident on your PC; these are typically TrueType fonts). There is often a wider choice of graphic fonts than printer fonts, but printing them is slower because they are sent to your printer as graphics.

PROCEDURE

1. On the Creation toolbar, click the Text generation tool.

2. Click inside the label.

3. Type Practice Text.

4. Right-click the text box and click Properties

5. In the Character tab, review these properties:

  • To select a unit of measure for fonts, click point size or inches.
  • Font displays the list of Printer or Graphic fonts available (depending on which you selected).
  • Printer uses fonts resident on the printer. Graphic uses fonts resident on your PC (TrueType fonts).
  • Height displays the character sizes available in the selected font. However, if you want to select a value that is not displayed, enter it in the Height text box in the lower right corner of the dialog box.
  • Size displays a preview of your font and height selections.
  • Subset displays the font character sets.
  • Style displays available style properties.
  • Width % is expressed as a percentage. For example, a value of 100% (the default) gives characters the most natural appearance; a value of 50% reduces the default by half; a value of 200% doubles the default.
6. In the Paragraph tab, review these properties:

  • Alignment allows you to have text left aligned, centered, right aligned or fully justified in its text box.
  • Fit to frame automatically adjusts character size to fit inside the frame. Adjust character size by changing the size of the text box.

With Fit to frame enabled, the Vertical alignment settings are also enabled on the Paragraph tab. Vertical alignment allows you to specify top, middle or bottom alignment for a paragraph of text.

  • Line spacing (%) is measured as a percentage of the height of the font. For example, to enter a line spacing that is same height as your font, select 100.
  • Wordwrap forces text to wrap within the borders of the text box.
    • Disable word hyphenation turns off automatic hyphenation for the text box.
    • Fixed height, adjusted width allows you to set a minimum width percentage for adjusting the text width while keeping the text height the same.
7. In the General, Shape settings, and Rendering tabs, you have the same properties we covered in the article Training Guide: Fixed Objects - About Fixed Objects.

8. In the Data source tab, notice that Fixed data is selected. You can edit the text in the box and your changes will be reflected on the label.

9. Click OK.
  • Once you place an object on a label, you can click and drag to move it.
  • To change the size of an object, click on a field handle and drag it.
  • To change the color of an object, select it and then click a box on the Color bar.
10. When you have the object positioned and sized the way you want it, select the object and then on the Object menu click Lock/unlock. Alternatively, you can click the Lock/unlock button on the Object formatting toolbar, or click the Lock check box on the General tab. A locked object cannot be modified, moved, re-sized, or deleted.
