OVERVIEW
Fixed objects, including Text, Barcodes, and Images, are fields that have a fixed data source. Meaning, when you add a fixed object to a label, the value that is entered does not change.
Variable objects are fields that have a variable data source. This means that their value is derived from a source, such as a clock or counter, resulting in different values appearing in the field. Variable data is briefly touched on at the end of this training guide.
You can set the following properties for fixed objects:
- General properties: Includes the object name, position, rotation, anchor point and margins.
- Shape settings: Includes the shape type to use for the object's background, background color and border options.
- Rendering properties: Includes the resolution of any selected pattern applied to the object's background.
- Data source properties: Allows you to set the data origin (for fixed objects, the data source is Fixed data).
To access the Properties dialog box from an existing text, barcode or image object, right click the object then select Properties. Alternatively you can double click on the object. The Properties dialog box will appear.
GENERAL TAB
The General tab allows you to define basic properties for an object.
- Name: Allows you to assign a unique name to the object.
- Position and Size: Allows you to enter the values for the X/Y coordinates of the object on the label, specifically the size of the object using Width and Height settings.
- Rotation: Changes the orientation of the object on the label.
- Options: Allows the following items to be checked Printable, Lock, Allow superimposing and Send as graphic.
- Printable: A printable object (box checked) indicated the object should print. A non-printable object (box unchecked) indicates the object should not print (object on the label is dimmed).
- Lock: A locked object (box checked) prevents the object from being modified, moved, re-sized or deleted. While locked, it's properties cannot be changed. An unlocked object (box unchecked) allows the object to be modified, moved, re-sized and deleted.
- Allow superimposing: Clear this check box if you want to prevent other objects from overlapping the text object.
- Send as graphic: Check the box in order to send the object to the printer as a graphic.
- Anchor points: Determines the base point from which the coordinates are calculated.
- Margins: Used to define a fixed margin between the object and its border.
SHAPE SETTINGS TAB
The Shape settings tab allows you to define the properties of a shape type, background and border that can be used with an object.
- Shape: Select the type of shape to be used as the object's background.
- Background: Check the background checkbox to apply the selected shape as the object's background.
- Color: Defines the color for the selected background shape. A pattern for the background can be chosen by clicking the Pattern button in the color drop down. NOTE: You can set the resolution for the selected pattern and view the results by clicking the Patterns resolution rendering button.
- Internal margin: Used to define a margin between the outside edge of the object (where the object handles appears) and the background shape.
- Border: Check the border checkbox to place a border line around the selected background shape (if an internal margin surrounds the shape, the border line will appear outside the margin).
- Color: Defines the color of the border.
- Dash style: Defines the dash style, if any, to use for the border.
- Dash cap: Defines the appearance of the dashes when a dash style is used.
- Width (mm): Defines the width of the outline, whether it is continuous or dashed.
- Outline: Displays only the outline of the defined border.
DATA SOURCE TAB
The Data Source tab allows you to change the text (for fixed objects the data source is Fixed Data).
- Fixed Data: Text can be enter and edited in the text object directly on the label.
- Variable Data: Allows the text object to be populated by a data source.
