Selecting a Printer

Printers
The first step to designing a label is to select the printer you will use for printing. The printer model selected determines what options are available and how the label will be printed—not all printers share the same characteristics.

Procedure
To select a printer for your label design:

1. On the File menu, click Select printer. Alternatively, you can click on the toolbar, or press F5.

2. The Printer dialog box appears. NOTE: The printer icon to the left of the printer name indicates an internal printer driver provided by LABELVIEW/CODESOFT.

3. Select the printer you want to use.

4. Click OK to confirm the selection.

Installing a Printer

Printer drivers
If the printer you will be using does not appear in the Printer dialog box, you must install it.

LABELVIEW/CODESOFT contain printer drivers for thermal/thermal-transfer printers from most thermal printer manufacturers. All of the thermal/thermal-transfer printer drivers are loaded on your machine when the software is installed.

It is recommended to use only the printer drivers that are installed with LABELVIEW/CODESOFT. Installing the thermal/thermal-transfer printer through Windows (or through LABELVIEW/CODESOFT and Windows) may result in errors at print time.

Procedure

To install a thermal/thermal-transfer printer driver:

1. On the File menu, click Select printer. Alternatively, you can click on the toolbar, or press F5.

2. Click Add. The Add printer dialog box appears.

3. In the Model box, expand the printer make and select the model that you want to use.

4. In the Port box, select the printer port. If you select a printer port (not a network printer), the Direct access check box appears.

5. Clear the Direct access check box.
  • With Direct access selected, the printer driver communicates directly with the printer. Because of this, you cannot use the PC for other tasks until printing is completed (possibly involving a delay).
  • With Direct access cleared, the printer driver transfers data to a print queue, which manages communication. This means you can use the PC for other tasks once all data has been transferred to the print manager (involving much less of a delay)

You can click Network printers to browse your network for a shared printer to install. You can click TCP/IP to enter an IP address and establish a Telnet connection with a shared printer

Configuring Printer Device Settings

Printer device settings
Printer device settings are used to control printer-specific functions such as print speed and temperature. The printer you are using will determine the specific attributes that you can change with regard to printing. Many of these software settings will override the printer’s hardware settings. These settings will vary greatly depending on the driver that you have loaded.

Procedure
To adjust the settings for your printer:

1. On the File menu, click Select printer. Alternatively, you can click on the toolbar, or press F5.

2. In the Printer dialog box, select the printer you just added. Click Settings.

3. A dialog box appears specific to the printer you selected. Here you can adjust settings such as print speed, temperature, cutter options, and paper feed mode.

NOTE: For information on the options available for your specific printer, click Help in the Printer settings dialog box or refer to your printer documentation.

Each printer driver will have its' own unique properties that can be adjusted. Some of the properties pages will look different than what is displayed in this example.
