Here are some reasons why the barcode may not be able to be read:
- Many barcode readers cannot read high-density barcodes. If a high-density barcode has been created, try selecting a medium or low-density barcode. Choosing a lower density makes the barcode more readable.
- There may be images that are too close to the barcode. There should be nothing on top of the barcode. Barcodes require what is called, white space, to the left and right of each barcode. A safe amount of white space is 20 times the density of the barcode (the number of mils divided by 1000). For example, a medium-density barcode of 15 mils would require 0.3 inches (.015 X 20) of white space to the left and right of the barcode. The minimum amount of white space is 12 times the density for most barcodes.
- It is also possible that the barcode reader is not set up the read the type of barcode that is being printed. Check the instruction manual that came with the reader to see how to set it up correctly.
