Code39 also referred to as "3 of 9 Code","Code39 mod 43" and "Extended Code39" was the first alphanumeric linear symbology developed. This is one of the most commonly used barcode symbologies in non-retail applications. The main reason for this is that it can encode uppercase letters,numbers and some punctuation. Every Code39 character consists of five bars and four spaces, making a total of 9 elements. Code39 can be either discrete or variable length. The asterisk, (*), is used as a start and stop character.
Code 39 accepts the following characters:
Capital letters A-Z
Numbers 0-9
Space character
Symbols - . $ / + %
