PDF417 (Portable Data File 417) is a two-dimensional (2D) barcode symbology capable of storing large amounts of information directly within the barcode. Unlike traditional one-dimensional barcodes that reference data stored in an external database, a PDF417 barcode contains the actual encoded information, allowing it to be read without requiring access to a database.
PDF417 supports full ASCII, binary, and numeric data, as well as many international character sets, making it suitable for applications that require large amounts of encoded information.
How PDF417 Error Correction Works
PDF417 includes built-in Error Correction Control (ECC), allowing damaged or partially obscured barcodes to remain readable. The barcode stores redundant information that enables barcode scanners to reconstruct missing data when damage falls within the selected error correction level.
NOTE: If a barcode is damaged beyond the configured error correction capability, the scanner returns no data rather than incomplete or incorrect information.
PDF417 Properties
The following properties are specific to the PDF417 barcode symbology.
Sets the Error Correction Control (ECC) level used by the barcode. Supported values range from 0 (lowest error correction) to 8 (highest error correction).
Higher ECC levels improve the barcode's ability to recover from damage but also increase the overall size of the barcode.
Specifies the number of rows and columns used to generate the PDF417 symbol. Adjusting these values changes the overall dimensions and aspect ratio of the barcode.
Enables or disables the truncated PDF417 format. When enabled, the right row indicator and stop pattern are replaced by a single-width bar, reducing the printed width of the barcode.
Truncated PDF417 symbols occupy less space but may be slightly less reliable for barcode scanners to decode than standard PDF417 symbols.
